Rat Royale slot by Pragmatic Play — game artwork

Pragmatic’s newest release is a gothic 5 × 5 with 259 ways to win, a 96.52% RTP and a 15,000× ceiling — and an unusually generous structure underneath. Three separate free-spin modes, each starting at ten spins. Two ante bets. Two buys.

The mechanic that holds it together is the Rat King wild, which lands on reel 3 only and arrives in four colours. The colour is not decoration — it decides what happens next.

The demo below runs the full game on play credits, including all three free-spin modes and both ante bets. The ante bets are the part worth testing here, because at 2.50× and 5× the base stake they change the cost of a spin substantially and the demo is the only place to see what you get for it. More on the figures above. Published as Rat Royale by Pragmatic Play; some game feeds, including the one this site’s library is built from, carry it as “Rat Royal” without the final e. Same game — same studio, same 22 October 2026 release, and the studio’s own artwork file is named Rat-Royale. One caution on the ways count: 259 is an unusual figure and the same number circulates on databases for an unrelated ELK Studios game called Rabbit Royale, so check it on the paytable if it matters to you.

How the game plays

Five reels, five rows, and 259 ways to win rather than fixed paylines. Base stakes run from 0.20 to 240 a spin, and the ante bets can push the maximum wager to 1,200.

The Rat King wild appears on reel 3 only. That single restriction shapes the whole game: reel 3 is the middle column, so a wild there contributes to the large majority of the 259 ways at once. It comes in four gem variants — Red, Purple, Green and Blue — and which one lands determines the effect, including which free-spin mode you are heading towards.

The bonus side has three modes, not three lengths: Blood Ritual, Blood Pact and Blood Lust. Each begins with ten free spins, and each is enhanced in a different direction. That is a more considered structure than Pragmatic’s usual one-bonus-with-a-multiplier-meter, and it is the main reason this game is worth more than a glance.

A 24.39% hit frequency — about one paying spin in 4.10 — sits in normal territory for a medium-volatility ways game.

The story behind the game

Released 22 October 2026. This review was written on the day of release, from the game’s own published figures.

It is a standalone, which is worth noting because so little of Pragmatic’s recent output is. The studio’s autumn 2026 run has been dominated by extensions of things that already worked — Big Bass Splash Halloween 1000, Gates of Olympus Super Scatter, Sweet Bonanza POP, Forever Split Megaways. Rat Royale belongs to no family and carries no number after its name.

The last genuinely new Pragmatic idea of comparable scale was Deep Sea Frenzy, and the two make an interesting pair: same 96.52% RTP, same medium rating, ceilings within a thousand times of each other, and completely different machinery underneath.

Symbols and paytable

Pragmatic publishes the full pay values on the in-game information screen. What follows is the part that changes how you read a spin.

The Rat King wild — reel 3 onlyThe restriction is the design. On a 259-ways board the middle column feeds almost every way simultaneously, so a single wild there does far more than a wild on reel 1 or 5 would. It is also why the game can afford to land them relatively often.
Four gem colours — Red, Purple, Green, BlueThe colour is functional, not cosmetic. Each variant carries its own effect and steers which of the three free-spin modes is in play. Learning the four is most of the learning curve.
The scatterOpens the free-spin modes. Which mode you get is not purely a matter of how many scatters land — the Rat King variants are part of it, which is unusual and takes a few rounds to read.
Multiplier wildsWilds carrying multipliers are listed among the game’s features and are where the 15,000× ceiling comes from. The base game will not reach it; the modes are the route.

The practical upshot is that reel 3 is the only column worth watching closely. On a ways board the outside reels contribute arithmetic; the middle one contributes the feature.

Bonus features and free spins

👑

Rat King wilds — four colours, one reel

Red, Purple, Green and Blue, all on reel 3. Each variant does something different, and together they are the route into the three free-spin modes. A wild in the middle column of a 259-ways grid is worth considerably more than the same symbol elsewhere.

🍾

Blood Ritual — 10 free spins

The first of the three modes. Ten spins to start, with retriggering available. Pragmatic enhances each mode in a different direction rather than simply lengthening it.

🩸

Blood Pact — 10 free spins

The second mode, again starting at ten. The three modes are alternatives, not tiers — which one you land changes what the round does, not how long it lasts.

💀

Blood Lust — 10 free spins

The third. Between them these three carry the whole top end of the game: the 15,000× ceiling is reachable in the modes and not in the base game.

🎯

Two ante bets, at 2.50× and 5×

Ante Bet 1 costs 2.50× the base stake and Ante Bet 2 costs 5×. Two levels is unusual — most Pragmatic games offer one. They raise the maximum wager to 1,200 a spin, so check what each buys you in the demo before committing to one.

What we like

  • Three distinct free-spin modes rather than one round with a meter is a more interesting structure than Pragmatic usually ships, and it gives the game genuine replay value.
  • 96.52% on the top build is above the broad video-slot average and matches the best of the studio’s autumn range.
  • A 24.39% hit frequency with medium volatility is a comfortable combination — roughly one paying spin in four, without the long droughts of the studio’s high-volatility titles.
  • A standalone, not a sequel. No number after the name, no existing family to already know.
What to watch

  • Two ante bets and two buys is a lot of ways to spend more. At 2.50×, 5×, 100× and 500× the base stake, the cost ladder climbs fast and the game does not make the trade-offs obvious.
  • The four gem variants take a while to learn. Nothing on screen summarises what each colour does, so the first several rounds are spent reading rather than playing.
  • 15,000× is good, not exceptional for Pragmatic in 2026 — Gates of Olympus Super Scatter reaches 50,000× and Sugar Rush 1000 reaches 25,000×.
  • The 259-ways figure is oddly specific and the same number circulates on databases for an unrelated game, which is a reason to confirm it on the paytable rather than take it on trust.

How Rat Royale compares

Against the Pragmatic releases we have reviewed from the same autumn run, Rat Royale sits at the top of the RTP band with a mid-table ceiling and an above-average amount of machinery.

Pelican PaydayPragmatic Play96.59%Low (2/5)5,000×3 × 5, 10 lines

Deep Sea Frenzy is the closest comparison and the useful one: identical 96.52% RTP, the same medium rating, and a ceiling within a thousand times. The difference is structural — Deep Sea Frenzy runs 50 fixed lines and one bonus, Rat Royale runs 259 ways and three. If you want the same numbers with less to learn, that is the one. Cheetah Wild and Pelican Payday are the gentler end of the range and both stop at 5,000×.

Rat Royale RTP, volatility and max win

Rat Royale is published at more than one RTP. Three certified builds, and the operator chooses. Pragmatic ships almost its entire range this way, and the difference never appears in the lobby — the live figure is in the game’s information screen. On a medium-volatility game with a 24.39% hit frequency, a two-point cut is felt as a balance that drains slightly faster rather than as a missing big win.

96.52%the headline build, and the one Pragmatic leads with
95.50%about a point down
94.53%two points below the headline

The headline is 96.52%, comfortably above the broad video-slot average and at the top of Pragmatic’s current band.

Two lower builds are certified alongside it — 95.50% and 94.53% — and the operator picks. This is standard practice across nearly the whole Pragmatic catalogue and it is not disclosed in the lobby. The running figure is printed on the game’s own information screen, and that is the only reliable place to read it.

The 24.39% hit frequency — about one paying spin in 4.10 — is the number that describes the actual experience better than the volatility label does. It is a game that returns something often enough to keep a session moving, with the real swings confined to the three modes.

Bets, bankroll and session planning

Base stakes run from 0.20 to 240 a spin.

Above that sit four separate ways to pay more. Ante Bet 1 at 2.50× the base stake and Ante Bet 2 at 5× raise the maximum wager to 1,200 a spin. Separately, Buy Free Spins costs 100× the bet and Buy Super Free Spins costs 500×.

That is more cost ladders than most Pragmatic games carry, and the game does not spell out the trade-offs anywhere on screen. The demo is genuinely useful here: it is the only way to see what Ante Bet 2 actually changes before paying five times a spin for it.

Playing on mobile

Runs in the browser on a phone with no download and no app. The 5 × 5 grid is well suited to portrait, and because the only reel that matters is the middle one, the layout stays readable at phone size — which is not always true of Pragmatic’s 6 × 5 scatter-pays games.

Five things to know before you spin

  1. Check which RTP build the casino runs before your first spin. Three are certified, two points apart, and only the information screen tells you which is live.
  2. Watch reel 3, not the whole grid. The Rat King only lands there, and on a 259-ways board that one column drives almost every result worth having.
  3. Learn the four gem colours in the demo first. Nothing on screen explains them, and they decide which free-spin mode you get — that is too important to work out with real money.
  4. Compare the two ante bets before picking one. 2.50× and 5× are very different prices, and the game does not present what each one buys side by side.
  5. The base game will not reach 15,000×. That ceiling lives in the three modes, so judge the base game on whether it keeps you in play long enough to reach one.

Who this slot is for

This suits a player who likes having something to learn. Three free-spin modes, four wild variants and two ante levels is a lot of structure for a medium-volatility game, and it rewards a few rounds of attention in a way that most of Pragmatic’s autumn releases do not.

It is less of a fit if you want to sit down and spin. The game offers four separate ways to increase your stake and explains none of them clearly, which is an easy way to spend more than intended. And if the ceiling is what you are shopping for, 15,000× is mid-table for this studio in 2026 — Gates of Olympus Super Scatter reaches 50,000× on a far simpler idea.

Our verdict on Rat Royale

8.0/ 10

Pragmatic’s most interesting structure in months

After an autumn of sequels and 1000-editions, Rat Royale is a standalone with real ideas in it. Three free-spin modes that differ in kind rather than length is a better design than one round with a multiplier meter, and the reel-3-only Rat King is a neat way to make a single wild matter on a 259-ways board.

The numbers back it up without being spectacular: 96.52% is at the top of the studio’s band, the 24.39% hit frequency keeps a session moving, and 15,000× is a respectable if unremarkable ceiling.

The reservation is the cost ladder. Two ante bets and two buys, none of them clearly explained on screen, is a lot of ways to quietly multiply your stake. Spend the first ten minutes in the demo working out what each one actually does — the game is good enough to deserve that, and expensive enough to require it.
