Fortune Dragon slot by Pragmatic Play — game artwork

Pragmatic’s Lunar New Year dragon, and the thing that makes it worth a look is on every single spin: before the reels stop, the game picks a random multiplier between 1× and 40×. It applies to any win containing a wild.

That is a far more active base game than 243 ways would normally give you. The free spins then widen the board to 576 ways by adding a symbol to each of the three middle reels. 96.50% on the top build, high volatility, and no published ceiling.

The demo below runs the full game on play credits. Worth a few minutes here specifically to watch the multiplier draw — it happens before every spin and it is the single mechanic that decides whether a session is dull or interesting, which is not something a stat line can tell you. More on the figures above. No overall maximum win is published for this game. What is published are component figures that do not add up to a ceiling: the golden pig pays up to 10,000 coins, the scatters pay up to 20× your stake, and the spin multiplier reaches 40×. A “5,000×” figure circulates on one comparison blog with no second source, so it is not printed here. Watch the name, too: PG Soft also ships a Fortune Dragon (3 × 3, 5 paylines, 96.75%) and Games Global ships Fortune Dragon Link&Win (96.53%, 12,500×). Three different games, three different sets of numbers, all under near-identical names.

How the game plays

Five reels, three rows, 243 ways to win. No paylines to set; a win is any run of matching symbols from the leftmost reel.

The dragon is the wild and it lands on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. It substitutes for everything except the scatter. That restriction is the hinge of the whole design, because of what sits on top of it.

Before each spin, the game draws a multiplier between 1× and 40× and shows it to you. It applies to any winning combination that includes a wild. So every spin arrives with a known ceiling already attached, and a spin carrying 40× is worth watching in a way a spin carrying 1× simply is not. Pragmatic rarely does this — its usual approach is multipliers that accumulate inside a bonus round, not a fresh draw on every base-game spin.

Three or more scatters pay up to 20× your stake on their own and open the free spins. In the round, three extra symbols are added to reels 2, 3 and 4, which takes the board from 243 ways to 576. The base-game rules otherwise carry over, multiplier draw included.

The story behind the game

Released 24 January 2024, timed for the Lunar New Year — the Year of the Dragon began on 10 February that year, and Pragmatic ships a zodiac title most Januaries.

It is a standalone. No sequel, no 1000 edition, no Super Scatter rebuild, which in Pragmatic’s catalogue is unusual enough to be worth noting: Gates of Olympus, Sugar Rush, Sweet Bonanza and Big Bass have all been extended three or four times over. Fortune Dragon was released once and left alone.

The name is the problem. PG Soft ships a Fortune Dragon too — a 3 × 3 game with five paylines and a 96.75% RTP, which is a completely different machine. Games Global ships Fortune Dragon Link&Win, at 96.53% with a 12,500× ceiling. Search for the figures and you will get all three mixed together, which is the main reason this review spells out which game it is reviewing.

Symbols and paytable

Pragmatic publishes the full pay values on the in-game information screen. What follows is the part that changes how you read a spin.

The dragon wild — reels 2, 3 and 4Substitutes for everything except the scatter, and it is the only symbol the spin multiplier applies to. A win without a wild in it pays flat, no matter what number the game drew. That is the single most useful thing to understand about this game.
The spin multiplier — 1× to 40×Drawn before the reels move and displayed. It is not a symbol and it cannot be collected or carried forward; it belongs to that spin only.
The scatterPays up to 20× your stake from anywhere, independently of the ways, and three or more open the free spins. A scatter payout that size in the base game is generous for Pragmatic.
The golden pigThe top-paying symbol, worth up to 10,000 coins. Coins, not stake multiples — what that converts to depends on your coin value, which is why it cannot simply be read as a max win.

Put those together and the game has an unusually legible shape: a wild confined to the middle three reels, a multiplier that only pays on wild wins, and a widened board in the bonus. Everything points at the same thing — land the dragon when the number is high.

Bonus features and free spins

🐉

A fresh 1×–40× multiplier on every spin

Drawn and displayed before the reels stop, and applied to any win containing a wild. A base game where every spin arrives pre-loaded with a known ceiling is rare, and it is why this plays livelier than its 243 ways suggest.

✨

The dragon wild, reels 2–4

The middle three reels only. On a 243-ways board that is where a wild does most of its work anyway, but the restriction also means the multiplier cannot attach to a win built purely on reels 1 and 5.

🎓

Free spins widen the board to 576 ways

Three or more scatters trigger the round, and three extra symbols are added to reels 2, 3 and 4. The board goes from 243 ways to 576 — more than double — and the multiplier draw continues throughout.

💰

Scatters that pay on their own

Up to 20× your stake, from anywhere on the grid, paid independently of the ways. Triggering the bonus therefore comes with a payout attached rather than merely a change of scene.

What we like

  • A random 1×–40× multiplier drawn before every spin is a genuinely different base game, and far more engaging than Pragmatic’s usual accumulate-inside-the-bonus approach.
  • 96.50% on the top build is at the top of Pragmatic’s band and matches Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush.
  • 576 ways in free spins is more than double the base board, which is a bigger structural change than most Pragmatic bonus rounds make.
  • Scatters pay up to 20× by themselves, so the trigger is worth something on its own.
What to watch

  • No published maximum win. The component figures — 10,000 coins, 20× scatters, 40× multiplier — do not combine into a stated ceiling, and the 5,000× figure online has a single unverified source.
  • The multiplier only pays on wild wins. A 40× draw on a spin with no dragon in it is worth exactly nothing, which happens far more often than it feels like it should.
  • The wild is locked to reels 2–4, narrowing the chances of the multiplier mattering on any given spin.
  • Two RTP builds in circulation and one review page quoting both, so you cannot assume 96.50% without checking.

How Fortune Dragon compares

Against the Pragmatic games we have reviewed that share its RTP band, Fortune Dragon is the one with the most unusual base game and the least documented top end.

GameStudioRTP (top build)VolatilityMax winGrid
Fortune DragonPragmatic Play96.50%HighNot published5 × 3, 243 ways
Cheetah WildPragmatic Play96.50%Low (2/5)5,000×5 × 4, 1,024 ways
Gates of OlympusPragmatic Play96.50%High5,000×6 × 5, pay anywhere
Wonders of AztecPragmatic Play96.55%Medium10,000×6 × 5, scatter pays
Rat RoyalePragmatic Play96.52%Medium15,000×5 × 5, 259 ways

Every other game on that list publishes a ceiling and this one does not, which is the honest mark against it. On mechanics, though, it is the odd one out in a good way: Gates of Olympus and Wonders of Aztec both build multipliers inside a bonus round, where Fortune Dragon hands you a new one before every base-game spin. Cheetah Wild is the nearest thing to a gentle alternative at the same RTP.

Fortune Dragon RTP, volatility and max win

Fortune Dragon is published at more than one RTP. Pragmatic ships almost its whole catalogue at operator-selected returns, and this title is a good illustration of why that matters: the same review page quotes 96.50% in its text and 95.52% in its stats box, which is exactly what happens when two builds of one game are in circulation. Neither figure is wrong; they are different builds. The one you are playing is on the information screen.

96.50%the headline build
95.52%about a point down — the figure one database lists as the default

The headline is 96.50%, which is the top of Pragmatic’s standard band and the same figure Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush carry.

A second build at 95.52% is also in circulation, and the clearest evidence of it is that one widely-read review page quotes 96.50% in its text and 95.52% in its own stats box. That is not a contradiction so much as two builds being described by the same page without it noticing. The operator chooses, and the figure is not announced in the lobby.

On volatility the sources agree: high. That matches the structure. A board where the headline mechanic only pays when a wild lands on one of three specific reels is a design that produces long stretches of ordinary spins and occasional large ones. No hit frequency is published, which is a genuine gap on a game this volatile — it is the figure that would tell you how long the quiet stretches really are.

Bets, bankroll and session planning

Pragmatic sets the range per operator; one database lists this title to a maximum of 500 a spin.

With 243 ways there is no line count to adjust, so coin value is the only control. There is no feature buy and no ante bet on this game, which is worth noting because almost every Pragmatic release since has carried at least one. The only route into the free spins is three scatters.

That absence is actually part of the appeal. A game whose base spins each arrive with their own multiplier does not need a buy button to stay interesting, and the cost of a spin is simply the cost of a spin.

Playing on mobile

Runs in the browser on a phone with no download and no app. The 5 × 3 grid is comfortable in portrait, and the multiplier readout is large and sits above the reels where you cannot miss it — which matters, because the whole game is built around noticing it before the spin resolves.

Five things to know before you spin

  1. Check the RTP build before your first spin. Two are in circulation, 96.50% and 95.52%, and only the information screen tells you which is live.
  2. Remember the multiplier needs a wild. A 40× draw on a spin that lands no dragon pays nothing extra. That is the single most common misunderstanding of this game.
  3. The wild only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4. Watch the middle of the board, not the edges.
  4. Do not plan around a max win. Pragmatic publishes none for this game, and the 5,000× figure circulating online has one unverified source.
  5. Make sure you have the Pragmatic game. PG Soft and Games Global both ship a Fortune Dragon, with different grids, different RTPs and different ceilings.

Who this slot is for

If Pragmatic’s recent output has started to feel like the same bonus round in different costumes, this is a useful change. A new multiplier on every spin gives the base game something almost no other title in the catalogue has, and the jump to 576 ways in free spins is a real structural shift rather than a cosmetic one.

It is less suitable if you want to know your ceiling before you start. There is no published max win, no hit frequency, and high volatility — three unknowns stacked together. For a comparable RTP with everything on the record, Rat Royale at 15,000× or Wonders of Aztec at 10,000× are the safer picks.

Fortune Dragon demo and slot FAQ

Can I play the Fortune Dragon demo for free?
Yes. The demo on this page runs the full game on play credits — the same 5 × 3 grid, all 243 ways, the per-spin multiplier draw and the free spins. No account, no deposit, no download.
What is the RTP of Fortune Dragon?
96.50% on the headline build. A second build at 95.52% is also in circulation and the operator chooses, so check the game’s information screen for the figure in play.
What is the maximum win on Fortune Dragon?
Pragmatic does not publish one. The golden pig pays up to 10,000 coins, scatters pay up to 20× your stake and the spin multiplier reaches 40×, but those do not combine into a stated ceiling. The in-game paytable is the authority.
How does the 40x multiplier work?
Before every spin the game draws a random multiplier between 1× and 40× and shows it to you. It applies to any winning combination that contains a wild. A win with no wild in it pays flat regardless of the number drawn.
How many ways to win does Fortune Dragon have?
243 in the base game. In free spins, three extra symbols are added to reels 2, 3 and 4, which takes the board to 576 ways.
Where does the wild land?
On reels 2, 3 and 4 only. It substitutes for every symbol except the scatter.
Is this the same as the PG Soft Fortune Dragon?
No. PG Soft ships a different game of the same name — 3 × 3 with five paylines and a 96.75% RTP. Games Global also ships Fortune Dragon Link&Win at 96.53% with a 12,500× ceiling. Three separate games.
When was Fortune Dragon released?
24 January 2024, timed for the Lunar New Year.

Our verdict on Fortune Dragon

7.5/ 10

A better base game than Pragmatic usually builds

The per-spin multiplier draw is the reason to play this. Most Pragmatic games ask you to survive the base game until a bonus round starts paying; this one gives every single spin a reason to watch it, and a 40× draw turns an ordinary 243-ways board into something genuinely tense. The jump to 576 ways in free spins is a real change of gear rather than a longer version of the same thing.

What holds it back is the paperwork. No published maximum win, no hit frequency, and two RTP builds in circulation on a high-volatility game is more unknowns than a title this good deserves. And the multiplier-needs-a-wild rule is easy to miss, which makes the first session more frustrating than it should be.

Play the demo and watch two things: how often the dragon actually lands on reels 2 to 4, and what the multiplier is doing when it does. If that rhythm works for you, it is one of the more interesting Pragmatic games of the last two years. If you want the numbers nailed down first, Rat Royale is the same studio at 96.52% with a published 15,000×.
