Mustang Gold slot by Pragmatic Play — game artwork

The Mustang Gold demo is the game where Pragmatic Play worked out the money-and-collect format it has been reusing ever since. Cash symbols land on the first four reels holding anything from 1× to 35×, and a collect symbol on reel five sweeps up everything visible. Pragmatic publishes both the headline numbers for once — 96.53% RTP and a 12,000× maximum win — which makes this a better-documented game than several of the studio’s more recent releases.

The demo above runs the full game on play credits — the money symbols, the collect, the free spins and the Jackpot Reveal. No account, no deposit, nothing real can be won or lost. Because the jackpot here is four fixed prizes rather than a progressive, the demo shows you exactly the same structure a real-money session would. This demo is part of our Pragmatic Play demo games library.

Top line pay12,000× betPublished by Pragmatic itself as a “12,000x maximum win”. That makes this one of the minority of Pragmatic games on this site with a studio-stated ceiling rather than an aggregator’s guess.
JackpotFour fixed prizes — 50×, 100×, 200× or 1,000×Worth being precise about, because our own catalogue tags this game “Progressive” and Pragmatic’s description does not support that. The Jackpot Reveal triggers when a collect symbol lands alongside a jackpot-value money symbol, and matching three in that round wins 50×, 100×, 200× or 1,000× the bet. Those are fixed multipliers, not a pooled prize that grows with play.

More on the figures above. The 96.53% RTP, the 12,000× maximum win, the 1×–35× money symbol range on reels 1 to 4, the collect symbol on reel 5, the eight free spins from three scatters, the retrigger rule and the four Jackpot Reveal values all come from Pragmatic Play’s own game page. The studio publishes no volatility rating, no reel or payline count and no release date for this title. The note about the “Progressive” tag refers to this site’s own catalogue feed, not to Pragmatic.

How the game plays

Pragmatic does not publish the grid or the payline count, so neither is stated here. The mechanic, which it does publish, works like this.

Money symbols appear on reels one to four carrying values between 1× and 35× the bet. They do nothing on their own. The collect symbol lands on reel five, and when it does it awards every money value currently visible on the reels. That is the entire base-game loop: watch the money build on the left, hope for a collect on the right.

Three scatters open the free spins with eight spins, and the round is seeded with extra money symbols and extra collect symbols, which is what makes the feature worth more than the base game rather than simply longer. Landing three more scatters on reels two to four retriggers it for another eight spins, and it can keep going.

Sitting across all of it is the Jackpot Reveal. When a collect symbol lands alongside a money symbol carrying a jackpot value, the reveal round starts, and matching three symbols there pays 50×, 100×, 200× or 1,000× the bet.

The story behind the game

Mustang Gold is one of the more consequential games in Pragmatic’s catalogue, not because of what it earned but because of what it established. The money-symbol-plus-collect structure it uses is the same one that later powered the entire Big Bass series — thirteen of which are reviewed on this site — where the fisherman replaced the collect symbol and the cash fish replaced the money symbols. Seen that way, this is the prototype. It is also a reminder that the format did not start out as a fishing game at all; it started out on a prairie, with horses.

Two rows are worth dwelling on. The money symbols cap at 35× each, which is modest — this game builds a big result from many small values collected at once rather than from one enormous symbol, which is the opposite of how the later Big Bass games work. And the jackpot row says fixed, because it is: four stated multipliers, topping out at 1,000×. If you have seen this game described as progressive, including in this site’s own catalogue tags, that description does not match what Pragmatic publishes.

Bonus features and free spins

💰

Money on the left, collect on the right

Money symbols land on reels one to four holding 1× to 35×. The collect symbol lands on reel five and takes everything visible. The whole base game is the tension between those two halves of the screen.

🏆

Free spins are seeded, not just longer

Eight spins from three scatters, but the round adds extra money symbols and extra collect symbols. That is why the feature is worth more per spin than the base game rather than simply giving you more of the same.

🔁

It retriggers from the middle reels

Three more scatters on reels two to four adds another eight spins, and it can happen repeatedly. A long feature on a seeded board is where the 12,000× becomes conceivable.

🎰

Four fixed jackpots, not a progressive

A collect landing with a jackpot-value money symbol opens the reveal. Match three and it pays 50×, 100×, 200× or 1,000×. These are fixed multipliers of your bet — nothing pools and nothing grows.

What we like

  • Both headline figures are studio-published — 96.53% RTP and a 12,000× maximum win. Across the twelve games researched for this batch, only a handful managed that.
  • 96.53% is a strong number, half a point above the 96% reference and better than every Big Bass game on this site except the four classic titles.
  • 12,000× is a real ceiling on a game of this age, and larger than most of the series it went on to inspire.
  • The free spins are seeded with extra symbols, which makes the feature qualitatively different from the base game rather than just more of it.
  • The jackpot is honest. Four fixed multipliers, clearly stated, with no pooled prize dangled in front of players who will almost never reach it.
  • It is the prototype for the Big Bass format, which makes it genuinely interesting to play after the thirteen fishing games reviewed here.
What to watch

  • No published volatility rating. Pragmatic states none, which on a collect-based game matters, because the distribution of collect symbols is what shapes the entire experience.
  • No published grid or payline count, which remains an odd omission across this studio’s pages.
  • Money symbols cap at 35×, so a single symbol can never carry a round. Everything depends on volume collected at once.
  • Our own catalogue tags it “Progressive”, which Pragmatic’s description does not support. Feed data and studio data disagree, and the studio is the one to believe.
  • The 1,000× top jackpot is well below the 12,000× game maximum, so the thing labelled “jackpot” is not the biggest thing the game can pay.
  • Operators license lower-RTP builds of Pragmatic games routinely, so 96.53% is the studio’s figure, not necessarily your casino’s.

Mustang Gold holds up remarkably well against its own descendants. Its 12,000× ceiling beats every Big Bass game on this site except the 1000-series, its RTP is within two hundredths of Clover Gold and Buffalo King Megaways, and it is one of the few in the group with a published maximum at all. The Big Bass games took this format and made it famous; they did not, for the most part, make it better.

Mustang Gold RTP, volatility and max win

96.53% is Pragmatic’s published figure and it is a good one — half a point above the 96% reference and a shade ahead of most of the studio’s catalogue, which clusters tightly around 96.50%. Combined with a published 12,000× ceiling, this game gives a player more to work with than the majority of Pragmatic titles reviewed on this site. What is missing is a volatility rating, and on a collect game that gap matters more than usual: everything about how the session feels depends on how often the reel-five collect arrives, and the studio says nothing about it. The usual caution also applies — operators choose their build, and the information screen inside the game is the only figure that applies where you are playing.

Bets, bankroll and session planning

Pragmatic publishes no stake range for this game, so none is given here. Every value in the game — the 1× to 35× money symbols, the four jackpot prizes, the 12,000× maximum — is expressed as a multiple of the bet, so the structure is identical at any stake and only the cash figures move.

Playing on mobile

The demo above runs in a mobile browser without an app or download. The thing to watch on a small screen is reel five, because the entire base game resolves there — money can be stacked across the first four reels and it means nothing at all until a collect symbol appears on the right-hand edge.

Five things to know before you spin

  1. Watch reel five, not the money. Money symbols accumulating on the left are only potential. The collect symbol on reel five is the only thing that turns them into a win.
  2. Understand the jackpot before you chase it. It is four fixed prizes of 50×, 100×, 200× and 1,000× — not a progressive, whatever a listing may tell you, and well short of the game’s 12,000× maximum.
  3. The free spins are seeded. Extra money and collect symbols are added for the round, which is why eight free spins are worth considerably more than eight base spins.
  4. Retriggers come from reels two to four. Three scatters there adds another eight spins, and stacking retriggers on a seeded board is the realistic route to a big result.
  5. Check the RTP on the information screen. Pragmatic publishes 96.53%, operators pick the build, and the in-game panel is the only statement that applies to your casino.
  6. Play the demo to see how often the collect lands. With no published volatility, that is the only way to judge the rhythm. 18+, and set a limit before you leave free play.

Who this slot is for

For players who like the Big Bass collect loop and want to see where it came from, and for anyone who values a studio actually publishing its numbers — both headline figures here are Pragmatic’s own. The 12,000× ceiling gives it more headroom than most of the series it inspired. It is less suited to players who want a single huge symbol to carry a round, since money values cap at 35× and the game is built on collecting many of them at once.

Mustang Gold demo and slot FAQ

Can I play the Mustang Gold demo for free?
Yes. The demo on this page runs the full game on play credits, including the free spins and the Jackpot Reveal. No account, no deposit, and nothing real can be won or lost.
What is the RTP of Mustang Gold?
Pragmatic Play publishes 96.53%. Operators are routinely offered lower-RTP builds of Pragmatic games, so check the information screen inside the game for the figure your casino has licensed.
What is the maximum win?
12,000× the bet, published by Pragmatic Play itself as a “12,000x maximum win”. That is a studio figure rather than a third-party estimate.
Is the Mustang Gold jackpot progressive?
No. Pragmatic describes four fixed prizes — 50×, 100×, 200× and 1,000× the bet — won by matching three symbols in the Jackpot Reveal. Nothing pools and nothing grows with play, despite some listings tagging the game as progressive.
How does the collect mechanic work?
Money symbols land on reels one to four carrying values from 1× to 35×. A collect symbol landing on reel five awards every money value visible on the reels at that moment.
How many free spins do you get?
Eight, from three scatters, with extra money and collect symbols added to the round. Three more scatters on reels two to four retriggers it for another eight.
How volatile is Mustang Gold?
Pragmatic publishes no volatility rating for this game, so this review states none.
Is it related to the Big Bass games?
Not by name, but by design. The money-symbol-and-collect structure here is the same one the Big Bass series later used, with the fisherman as the collector and cash fish as the money symbols.

Our verdict on Mustang Gold

7.9/ 10

The prototype, and still better documented than most of what it inspired

It is tempting to treat Mustang Gold as a historical curiosity — the horse game that turned into thirteen fishing games. That undersells it. On the numbers Pragmatic actually publishes, this stands up against almost everything that followed: 96.53% RTP, a stated 12,000× maximum, a free-spins round seeded with extra symbols rather than merely extended, and a jackpot that is honestly described as four fixed prizes instead of being dressed up as a progressive.

Compare that with the Big Bass titles reviewed on this site, several of which publish no ceiling at all and have had their money-symbol caps reprinted around the internet as maximum wins. The prototype is the more transparent product. What it lacks is a volatility rating, which on a game where everything hinges on one collect symbol landing on one reel is a real gap — and the only way to fill it is to play the demo and watch. Do that first, check the information screen second, and this is one of the more quietly solid things in Pragmatic’s catalogue.
