Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt slot by Blueprint Gaming — game artwork

The Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt demo is Blueprint’s online take on the Merkur cabinet classic, and the number you need to know before anything else is the RTP. Blueprint publishes two certified builds — 93% and 94.5% — and names them both in its own file references. Neither reaches the 96% that the modern market treats as a baseline. That is the headline here, and no amount of expanding wilds changes it.

The demo above runs the full game on play credits, with the expanding Horus wilds and the free games exactly as a real-money build plays them. No account, no deposit, nothing real can be won or lost. It is also the only way to see this game without the RTP question mattering at all. This demo is part of our Blueprint Gaming demo collection.

More on the figures above. Both RTP figures, the 10 paylines and every feature description come from Blueprint Gaming’s own game page, which names the two certified builds in its file references. The page shows a volatility heading with no value and states no maximum win and no reel or row count. A date of 14 September 2023 appears beside the Slot category tag but is not labelled as a release date, so this review does not print a release year.

How the game plays

Ten paylines. Blueprint does not publish the reel and row count on its page, so this review will not state one. Wins come from matching symbols on a line, and the engine turns on a single idea borrowed straight from the cabinet: the Horus wild. Landing it on reels two, three or four expands it into a stacked wild covering the whole reel.

Three or more bonus symbols open the free games, and that is where the game stops being a simple line-pay slot. During the round an upgrading-symbol mechanic runs: each wild that lands turns the next highest-paying symbol into the top payer, and awards extra spins while it does it. Collect four scatters inside the feature and you are given additional spins plus a wild multiplier, with those multipliers reaching x5. The free games are therefore self-building — the longer they run, the better the symbol set gets, which is the opposite of how most free-spin rounds decay.

The story behind the game

Eye of Horus began life as a Merkur cabinet game in German arcades, where its expanding wild and upgrading free games made it one of the most recognisable titles on the floor. Blueprint Gaming, which sits inside the same Gauselmann group as Merkur, has spent years converting that catalogue for online play. Rise of Egypt is one of those conversions, and the cabinet inheritance explains both the strengths and the RTP. Arcade machines in regulated German venues ran at return levels that look low beside modern online slots, and the online rebuilds of these games have tended to carry that inheritance with them rather than shake it off.

The specification exactly as Blueprint publishes it, and what the page leaves blank is as informative as what it fills in.

Three blank rows in a row — reels, volatility, maximum win — is unusual even by the standards of a market that publishes less than it should. Blueprint puts the volatility heading on the page and then leaves the space beneath it empty, which is arguably worse than omitting it. What the studio does publish, clearly and in its own file naming, is the two RTP builds, and that is the specification that will actually decide what this game costs you.

Bonus features and free spins

👑

The Horus wild expands

Land it on reel two, three or four and it stretches to cover the reel. This is the mechanic the cabinet game was built on and it is reproduced faithfully — a single symbol turning into a full column is what makes the base game worth watching.

▲

Free games upgrade themselves

Each wild that lands during the feature promotes the next highest-paying symbol to top payer and awards extra spins with it. The round improves as it runs rather than winding down, which is a genuinely different shape from a standard free-spins count.

✖

Four scatters, multiplier and more spins

Collecting four scatters inside the free games awards additional spins and a wild multiplier. The multipliers reach x5, and because they attach to wilds that are already expanding, the two mechanics compound.

⚠

Two builds, and you do not choose

93% and 94.5%, both certified, both named by Blueprint. The casino licenses one of them. A point and a half of RTP is a large gap to leave to someone else’s procurement decision, and nothing on screen announces which build you are on except the information panel.

What we like

  • Blueprint publishes both RTP builds openly, in its own file references. Plenty of studios hide this; naming them on the game page is more honest than the industry norm, even when the numbers are poor.
  • The expanding Horus wild is the real thing, carried over from the Merkur cabinet intact, and it still makes the base game watchable rather than filler between bonuses.
  • Free games that improve as they run is a rarer structure than it should be. Upgrading the symbol set mid-feature means a long round compounds instead of fading.
  • Wild multipliers to x5 attach to wilds that already expand, so the two best things in the game stack rather than compete.
  • Ten lines is readable. Nothing tumbles, nothing cascades, and you can see exactly what paid.
  • The demo above removes the RTP problem entirely — free play costs nothing whichever build the operator licensed.
What to watch

  • 93% on the lower build is three points under the 96% reference, and that is not a rounding difference. It is the single most important fact about this game.
  • Even the better build is only 94.5%. There is no 96% version of this title on Blueprint’s page, so the ceiling on what you can be served is still below the market baseline.
  • No published volatility, and the page actively shows an empty heading where it should be, so there is not even an official hint at the shape of the variance.
  • No published maximum win. Nothing on the studio page tells you what the game can pay at its best.
  • No reel or row count either. For a line-pay game, not publishing the grid is an odd omission.
  • The cabinet inheritance shows in the maths. Games converted from arcade hardware have tended to arrive online carrying arcade-era return levels, and this one has.

How Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt compares

Against four Blueprint titles already reviewed on this site. The RTP column is the figure recorded in each game’s own review here, and it is the only column worth reading closely.

GameRTPCeilingStudioShape
Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt93.00% / 94.50%UnpublishedBlueprintExpanding wilds
Ted Megaways96.03%50,000×BlueprintMegaways
The Goonies96.00%10,000×BlueprintLicensed feature game
Wolf Legend Megaways96.21%50,000×BlueprintMegaways
Luck O’ The Irish Fortune Spins95.05%50,000×BlueprintFortune Spins

This is the useful comparison, because it shows that Blueprint is perfectly capable of shipping a 96% game. Ted Megaways and The Goonies both do, and Wolf Legend Megaways goes past it. Rise of Egypt is three points behind its own studio’s better work on the lower build and a point and a half behind on the higher one. Whatever the reason for that — the Merkur licence, the cabinet heritage, the operator segment it is aimed at — a player choosing between Blueprint games on return alone has four better options in that table.

Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt RTP, volatility and max win

Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt is published at more than one RTP. Blueprint publishes both builds on its own game page, named in its own file references — BP_EyeOfHorusRiseOfEgypt93 and BP_EyeOfHorusRiseOfEgypt95. There is no 96% version. Which one you are playing is the casino’s choice, not yours, and the gap between them is a point and a half.

94.50%the higher of the two certified builds — still a point and a half below the 96% reference
93.00%the lower build, and three points below reference

Blueprint certifies this game at 93% and 94.5%, and names both builds on its own page. Against a 96% reference, the lower build hands the house three extra points and the higher one a point and a half. To put that in practical terms, on the 93% build a hundred units of turnover is modelled to return seven to the house rather than four — the house edge is not three points worse, it is roughly seventy-five per cent larger. The information screen inside the game states which build the casino has licensed, and on a title with this spread it is worth opening before the first spin rather than after.

Bets, bankroll and session planning

Blueprint does not publish a stake range for this game and this review will not invent one. The limits you see in the demo above are the ones the operator has configured and they differ between casinos. What is worth saying is that no bet level changes the certified RTP — the build is fixed by the operator’s licence, not by how much you stake.

Playing on mobile

A ten-line game with no cascading grid is straightforward on a phone, and the demo above runs in a mobile browser with no app and no download. The expanding wild reads well on a small screen because it fills an entire reel, which is exactly the kind of large, obvious animation that survives being shrunk.

Five things to know before you spin

  1. Open the information screen first and find the RTP. This game exists at 93% and 94.5%. Knowing which one you have been given is the single most valuable thing you can learn about it, and it takes one tap.
  2. If the casino is running the 93% build, consider another game. Blueprint itself publishes 96% titles — Ted Megaways and The Goonies are both reviewed here and both clear the reference.
  3. Do not read “no published volatility” as low. The studio states nothing, the page shows an empty heading, and nobody should fill that gap with a guess, including this review.
  4. The free games are where the game lives. Each wild upgrades a symbol and adds spins, so a round that starts slowly can still end up the best thing that happens in a session.
  5. Watch reels two, three and four. That is the only place the Horus wild expands, and it is the difference between a line win and a full column.
  6. Use the demo to decide whether you like it at all, because free play is unaffected by the RTP build. 18+, and set a limit before you ever leave it.

Who this slot is for

For players who know the Eye of Horus cabinet from German arcades and want the same expanding wild online — that part is faithfully done. It is much harder to recommend to anyone choosing on numbers. Two certified builds at 93% and 94.5%, no published volatility and no published ceiling is a thin specification, and Blueprint’s own catalogue contains better-returning games with more published about them.

Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt demo and slot FAQ

Can I play the Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt demo for free?
Yes. The demo on this page runs the full game on play credits with no account and no deposit. Nothing real can be won or lost, and free play is unaffected by which RTP build an operator licenses.
What is the RTP of Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt?
Blueprint publishes two certified builds, 93% and 94.5%, and names both in its own file references on the game page. There is no 96% version. The casino decides which one it runs, and the information screen inside the game states the figure that applies to you.
Why are there two different RTPs?
Studios routinely certify several builds of the same game and let operators choose. Blueprint is more open about it than most — it publishes both. The practical effect is that the same game can cost you noticeably more at one casino than another.
What is the maximum win?
Blueprint does not publish one for this game, so this review does not state one.
How volatile is it?
Blueprint does not publish a volatility rating. Its page carries the heading with no value beneath it, so there is no official figure to report.
How does the Horus wild work?
Landing the Horus wild on reel two, three or four expands it into a stacked wild covering that whole reel. It is the mechanic carried over from the original Merkur cabinet game.
What happens in the free games?
Three or more bonus symbols trigger them. Each wild that lands upgrades the next highest-paying symbol into the top payer and awards extra spins. Collecting four scatters during the round adds more spins plus a wild multiplier of up to x5.
When was it released?
Blueprint’s page shows 14 September 2023 beside the Slot category tag, but does not label it as a release date, so this review does not state a release year.

Our verdict on Eye of Horus Rise of Egypt

6.2/ 10

A faithful conversion of a game whose maths stayed in the arcade

As a piece of engineering this is a careful job. The expanding Horus wild behaves exactly as it does on the cabinet, and the self-upgrading free games are a better structure than most online rounds manage — a feature that improves while it runs instead of counting down to nothing.

The problem is the number on the tin, and there are two of them. 93% and 94.5% are both below what the online market treats as normal, and Blueprint’s own catalogue proves the studio can do better, with Ted Megaways and The Goonies both at or above 96% and both reviewed on this site. Add a volatility heading with nothing under it and no published ceiling, and a player trying to make an informed choice is left with very little. Credit where it is due for naming both builds publicly — that is more than many studios do. But knowing precisely how much worse than average a game is does not make it a better game. Play the demo for the wild, and check the information screen before you ever play it for money.
