Coven Rising is a cluster-pays game. Five or more matching symbols connected horizontally, vertically or diagonally form a win, the winning positions pay and then respin, and the centre position respins after every win as well. There are no paylines and no reels in the usual sense.

The grid, and a discrepancy worth knowing about. Pragmatic Play’s own game page describes a 1-4-7-6-7-4-1 arrangement — seven columns, thirty positions. BigWinBoard describes 1-4-7-6-7-6-7-4-1 — nine columns, forty-three positions — and its data panel files the game as nine reels. SlotCatalog records the layout as not applicable and takes no side.

We quote the studio’s own figure in the panel above, because that is our standing rule. One observation is worth adding, though, and it points the other way: both descriptions refer to a single centre position where the witch symbols land, and only a column with an odd number of cells can have one. Pragmatic’s middle column holds six; BigWinBoard’s holds seven. That is an argument from the shape of the two descriptions rather than a source, so we have not used it to overrule the studio — but if you count the positions in the demo above and they come to forty-three, you will know which one was right.

Symbols come in levels. There are six regular paying symbols and each exists at five levels. A level-one symbol is worth between 0.05× and 0.5× the total bet; a level-five symbol is worth between 5× and 50×. Upgrading a symbol’s level is therefore worth roughly a hundredfold, and that is what the red witch does.

Blanks are real. Positions can land with nothing in them, and a blank is not a gap — it is a symbol with no value that occupies a position a cluster needed. Two of the four modifiers exist specifically to deal with them.

Wins land often on this board: BigWinBoard records one in every 2.83 spins, the highest hit rate of any Pragmatic release this month. With a top symbol at 50× the bet and a ceiling of 5,000×, that tells you the shape of the game straight away — frequent, small, and capped a long way below the rest of the studio’s September slate.

The story behind the game

Witch slots are not scarce. NetEnt’s What’s Up Witches? and Nolimit City’s True Kult both occupy the same territory, and BigWinBoard placed this one between them on atmosphere. What is scarcer is a major studio shipping a grid that is not a rectangle.

Pragmatic Play’s 2026 output has been unusually conventional — number-inflated sequels, three-pot respin games, retro symbol sets. Coven Rising is the exception: a circular board, cluster wins, symbol levels, blank positions and a modifier that fires from a single centre cell. It is not a remake of anything and it is not part of a series.

SlotCatalog records the release on 10 September 2026 with a wide release on 17 September, which is also the date BigWinBoard published its review and the date our own catalogue first lists it as playable.

Whether the experiment lands is genuinely contested. BigWinBoard scored it 5 out of 10 and concluded the unconventional approach “often feels more experimental for the sake of being different”. That is a fair criticism of the presentation. It is not a fair criticism of the maths, which is the part of this game that deserves attention — and which is covered in the RTP section below.

Symbols and paytable

All values are multiples of the total bet. There are no paylines to divide by: a cluster of five or more connected symbols pays whatever the level of those symbols is worth, and the level is the thing that moves.

What is not here: a jackpot, a gamble, a cascade in the tumbling sense, or a wheel. The respin on winning positions is the closest thing to a cascade, and it differs in an important way — symbols do not fall from above, each winning position simply spins again on its own.

The first and last columns tell opposite stories about the same five games, and the last column is the one worth reading. Freya 1000 advertises twice Coven Rising’s ceiling and prices it twenty times further away. Eternal Diamonds advertises four times the ceiling at twenty-four times the distance. Only Gates of Olympus 2500 offers a bigger headline at a comparable probability, and it wins anything at all far less often — one spin in 3.58 against one in 2.83.

Read as a group, Coven Rising is the game in this slate where the top of the paytable is a plausible outcome rather than a decoration. Whether that is worth a 5,000× cap is a question about what you want from a session, not about which game is better built.

Pragmatic Play publishes 96.42% on its own game page, and SlotCatalog and BigWinBoard’s data panel both confirm it, alongside two lower certified builds at 95.49% and 94.49%. One note for anyone cross-checking: BigWinBoard’s review text quotes 96.24%, which contradicts the 96.42% in its own data panel and the studio’s page. Three sources against one transposed pair of digits.

Now the part that makes this game unusual. Every optional bet in Coven Rising returns more than the default game does. SlotCatalog publishes the per-option figures and they run the opposite way to almost every ante bet and bonus buy in the industry:

An ante bet that raises the return is rare. The usual arrangement is that you pay extra for frequency and give up a fraction of a point for the privilege; here you pay three times the stake and are handed 0.08 of a point back, plus seven times the trigger rate. Per unit staked, the ante bet buys roughly 2.3 times the free spins frequency of the base game and returns more while doing it. On the published numbers there is no version of this game where the standard bet is the best available option.

The caveat is the obvious one: tripling your stake triples your exposure, and the correct comparison is not “ante bet versus base bet at the same stake” but “ante bet at one third the coin value versus base bet at full coin value”. Do that and the arithmetic still favours the ante. Do it without lowering the coin value and you are simply betting three times as much.

Volatility and ceiling. BigWinBoard and SlotCatalog both file this as medium, and Pragmatic publishes no rating. The ceiling is 5,000× the total bet at a probability BigWinBoard puts at 1 in 1,024,194 spins — the most reachable of the studio’s September releases, and the reason the low headline is not the criticism it first appears to be.

Bets, bankroll and session planning

The bet range is 0.20 to 240 a spin per SlotCatalog and BigWinBoard. The coin value is multiplied by 20 to give the total bet in the base game, and by 60 with the ante bet switched on — every paytable value, coin value and cluster win is a multiple of that total.

That 20-to-60 relationship is the single thing to understand before you set a stake here. If you want the ante bet’s seven-times trigger rate and its 96.50% return but not three times your exposure, drop the coin value to a third of what you would otherwise use. The game does not suggest this and the interface does not make it obvious, but it is the difference between taking the better bet and simply betting more.

Without the ante, free spins arrive once in about 337 spins. At 0.20 a spin that is around 67 in turnover for one expected round; with the ante bet on at the same coin value, the same expectation arrives in roughly 48 spins but at triple the stake. The buys are 100× for the standard round and 200× for the version with no blanks in the centre position, and both return more than the base game.

One structural point about session length: because winning positions respin and the centre position respins after every win, a single spin on this game is not a single event. A good spin can chain for a long time, which makes the game slower per spin than its hit rate suggests and makes a spin count a poor proxy for how long a session will run.

The circular grid is the problem and the attraction. On a desktop monitor the arrangement reads clearly and the four witches standing around it do what the theme wants. On a phone in portrait, a board that is wider in the middle than at the edges wastes the screen’s shape, and the centre position — which is where every modifier lands and which respins after every win — is the thing you most need to see. Landscape is materially better here, more so than on any other game in this month’s slate.

Five things to know before you spin

1. Read the per-option RTPs before you decide how to play. Base game 96.42%, ante bet 96.50%, buy free spins 96.48%, buy super free spins 96.49%. On this game the default bet is the worst-returning option available.
2. If you switch the ante on, cut the coin value to a third. The bet multiplier goes from 20× to 60×, so a third of the coin value keeps your stake where it was and still buys seven times the trigger rate.
3. Watch the symbol levels, not the symbols. A level-five cluster is worth roughly a hundred times the same cluster at level one. The red witch is the modifier that moves that needle, and in free spins its upgrades persist.
4. Blanks are the real enemy on this board. They occupy positions a cluster needed and they land freely. The upgraded yellow witch clearing every blank at once is the single best thing that can happen in the base game.

Who this slot is for

Coven Rising is not the best-looking or the easiest game Pragmatic released this month, and it has the lowest ceiling by a factor of four — but it is the only one where the optional bets all return more than the default, and the only one where the top of the paytable sits at odds you could describe as long rather than theoretical.
